Starting a Photography Business

Hello, my wife and I are looking to start a business using our extensive photography portfolio (Primarily outdoors and wildlife) and our photography experience. We are considering a primarily web-based business and are looking for input from experienced
persons who have been successful in their own business. We need to determine appropriate steps to begin our venture, such as, would it be best to develop a business plan first? Is it necessary (I believe it is) to obtain business licensing in our state/locality? How can we make such a business stand out in what is to our knowledge a competetive field? We would greatly appreciate any input regarding tips
on starting a business to sell our works.

Thank you!

Randall Michal

many people suggest to business plan but a lot of time people do not follow through. For example, myself when started my export/import business i did not use a plan. When the business start to grow that is when you really need plans because you start using your assets more direct for you to make sales.

I would recommend a business plan as well. It helps to determine what resources are required, where the financing will come from and it is designed to make you answer the most important questions; Who is my customer, What do I provide them, and How do I make money. I wouldn't worry so much about a three year financial forecast, I have never actually seen one that was worth anything after the business got off the ground. I would at least plan it out yearly.
