I agree with John Walden's approach: Get connected to a SCORE mentor in your area as soon as you can. A mentor can guide you to resources you need to improve your business acumen and won't ask you for money. Most SCORE services are free, except for nominally priced workshops. Best of luck! The decision to start a business is huge, but you'll be rewarded if you do your homework. edit

Here is my advice to you - jump in and do it. You seem very motivated and ready to make a change in your life. Please don't expect anyone to make it happen for you, and all advice goes only so far. Keep in mind that those who can - do, and those who can't - teach... There are number of businesses that you can start without having a substantial money backing - you can start on your kitchen table, without office, without overhead, and with very little out of pocket expenses. The only thing you need is drive to succeed and willingness to learn as you go. I've started dozen successful businesses without a solid business plan and without any funds... The hardest thing is making the initial decision to do it, that's all. Learn as much as you can about the business you choose, and make sure it's something you like - you are far more likely to succeed if you like what you are doing vs. something you have no interest in. Don't do it for the money, do it right, and the money will follow. Good luck and just do it! :) edit
