Business Coaching for New Women Business Owners

One thing we, as women neglect, is ourselves. We are good at that, right? That is just what we do. We care. We care about the way things are, the way things will be, and the way things have been. This is what makes us unique. This is what makes us have different needs and desires. This is also what makes us strong.

As business owners, women need to create. Our business is like a child, we labor, we love and we learn.

we don't fit into a box. We juggle children, loved ones, careers, and housecare while sanity somedays feels like it is sneaking off into the horizon.

We try to tell our loved ones about the hopes and dreams we have for our new business, and they try to understand. Sometimes they offer suggestions, sometimes they tell us how to do things, and sometimes they just do not have time to listen. We understand all this but it is not what we, nor our business, needs.

Just like a child, our new business needs to be nutured. We need to take care of ourselves and we need to take care of our business. Everyone around us has us to rely upon, who do we have?

I totally agree with the assessment made by you. As a woman, I know the ups and downs of trying to carry the load and being there for others at the same time. I am a babe in this, and I really want to succeed in this venture. I have always been a fashion buff. But running a business and juggling family life has taken its toll. I have learned the hard way, I need "ME" time. So I have designated two days a week to be my off days and take care of me. No one can take care you better than yourself.

2 days is great! I can usually carve out 20 minutes -- or an hour if I'm too close to meltdown.

It maybe that my kids are grown and gone, but the youngest is in college. She still calls home for money or to get her car fixed. But mainly I get two days because I choose the days that are my slowest, for example, I chose Sunday and Tuesday. Monday is generally for cleaning and straightening up the shop because Wednesdays really start my week of hectic and chaos. Plus having a husband is like still having a child in the house.

I'm so glad that works for you. With after school classes, evening programs and weekend workshops - and providing the follow-up reports, I take a long soak in a bubble bath and/or walk the beach when I can, usually once a week for less than an hour.

But what scares me mainly is, trying to find seed money. There are some that promise they will help you, but it is mainly a scam. I am going on a shoestring and a prayer. I started my business with my own money, and it is hard keeping it afloat. I think loan officials think women are stupid when it comes to money matters. But I can smell a snake a mile away. Then you try to keep it seperate from your personal account and personal business, and they want to go by your personal credit.

How do I go about seeking seed money without including my personal credit?

That is a conundrum. If the business is new, they want your personal credit to validate backup funds are available. If the business is in existence and has shown profitable returns, they will assess your business assets and establish a credit limit based on the value. Credit Unions of whom you have established repore with are the best avenues of approach, as they are usually willing to flex a bit. Bigger bank entities are not quite so flexible.
Personal loans by friends or family are the most common way people fund their new business. There are also loans for economic development in local communities. Have you checked with your chamber of commerce? Have you looked into the SCORE program offered? These are free services mentors offered through your chamber. What creative ways can you think of to market your business without the use of funds? Can I ask is your business store front or internet based? This will help knowing which resources to pursue.

Contact the students at your local universities and business schools, especially those taking night classes. Also, maybe form an alliance with a self-defense instructor (karate, judo). While he teaches them about the self-protection you can help with the home protection.

As to women based loans -- Jami is correct that SCORE is a good suggestion, and your local SBA -- there should be a women's business network or association in your community that could lead you in the right direction.

Aloha,
Toni

Sandy, have you thought of government contracting? If you get a DUN #, have a TIN and Electronic Fund Transfer from your bank, you can contract for certain projects (albeit small) but they pay well, it gets you the PR, and since you are a MWBO (Minority/Women Business Owner), contractors or government agencies will prefer to use you because of the requirements they must fulfill.

The WBA is a great place to start for funding and grants. Where are you located? Have you considered getting in touch with celebrity reps? How about putting a new twist on things in your advertising campaign?
