I'm a big fan of bartering for services, I did some IT work for a restaurant in exchange for free coffee for life, it's was really nice to stop by anytime and get some coffee!

Bartering is such a great option so I would agree with it. Another option, and I am not sure if you provide a business service or not, is offering a performance based solution to your start up and small business clients that are cash strapped. We are holding a partner training called "Monetize Your Prospects" and I think it could be what you are looking for. Go to http://monetizeyourprospects.eventbrite.com for full information and registration for the August 27th training

With my business I first find out the budget. Then I look at free solutions first and once they see the value in the free methods and generate more revenue. I share with them a low cost solution to getting more exposure for their business. I also ask for referrals and if those individuals become a customer I work out an incentive for them.

The more ways you come up with to channel customers into your products/services the better. Thanks for sharing your creativity!

I did some logo design and menu work for a restaurant a few years back in exchange for dining gift certificates I could redeem over several months . . . definitely a win-win.

On another occasion a client let me use their beach time property in exchange for some free and reduced fee work I did.

In both cases, I knew both clients. I typically avoid people who I don't know who have the "next big idea" who want lots of free consulting and marketing work in exchange for future potential profit, especially those who can't produce a business or marketing plan.
