NEED some advice/direction for my newly built site

My partners and I recently launched www.mba365.com

Our initial strategy for the website was to target users looking for information on one year MBA programs. While I still feel this is an under-served niche, we kind of come to the conclusion that there just isn't enough traffic/demand in order to truly generate any meaningful revenue. We have had some thoughts to maybe just turn it into a site targeting all types of MBA programs, yet this is still quite a crowded space.

For revenue ideas, we had initially thought that maybe we could charge schools to maintain a particular page or community (like we set up at cornell.mba365.com) yet have discovered that this would take quite some time to build out the level of content that might be needed to drive any sort of traffic to the site.

So here we lie at a crossroads as far as our direction and strategy along with how we would potentially generate revenue from the site. I'm looking for any thoughts from the community as to different avenues we should explore as to strategy and revenue opportunities.

Thanks!

Chris, as an online writer, I'm always writing about different topics. A month or so ago, I had to write about eight MBA programs in San Diego. It took me a long time with the search engines to find the information. The schools do not market their programs well. What did help, believe it or not, were the community pages as you mentioned. I, too, see specific degree programs as a good niche. Information is the key to gaining visibility these days online. People are craving information. Think about niche e-books/reports that you can use to build traffic or income. Or, videos. And, definitely a blog. I don't know what is out there now, you would have to do a search. But, think about all that information that is sold in book stores about colleges, etc. A big market.
Best,

Chris, leads right now in education (continuing ed, online ed) are hot. Leads or even advertising should do okay, but you need traffic. And there are a lot of players competing with you for traffic.

There might be a couple of things you can do to help drive traffic. Take a look at: http://www.browsemystuff.com and then drop me a not and we can set a time to talk to see if there's something we could do to help you.

I just typed in Google 'mba in a year' & 'accelerated mba' you don't make page 1 on either. Perhaps those paid ads on the right column might help. Your web site looks great. You just have a lot of competition. But people have to know you exist to get them to your site. Your bar can be giving away free beer, but people won't come if they never heard of your bar or your promotion.

Chris, You need to learn how to use Social Marketing like I did. Since your "product" is educational based, it is a natural. SEO, blogs, article writing, ezines, ebooks, your website, and much more need to be linked together, and not just physically. You need to have a cohesive marketing campaign that will get you to the top of the list...and also get you more contacts simply through these SM programs. It really works, not for everyone, but for someone that is already based on education it is ready made.

Chris, I hate to tell you this, but based upon the people you re hoping to base your site on, you have a "goldmine" just waiting to be tapped. There is nothing more valuable than information on the internet, and you can provide it for free, from your group, and make money by providing the resting place for them...and I'm not talking about selling advertising to them. You should be able to start making money within 30 days of setting up your entire system including your site, profiles, blogs, and the two big ones...group involvement and your auto-responder. I'm writing an eBook on the topic you can get for free from my blog. http://3venterprises.blogspot.com/ Go ahead and read it. There's no obligation, and I think the first couple of chapters alone will make you start to think.

I checked out your site. I see you are ranked 566, 530 in the world which is a great start. 120, 695 in the US which isn't too bad. I want to know which key words you want to specifically rank for. If you would like to connect I can share with you how to get top rank on google searches for you specific keywords. I will show you what I have done with keywords I have chosen to dominate.

Chris,
Have you consider expanding the target market to support an wider ad revenue model?

Perhaps go beyond the MBA colleges themselves, into the communities and resources that potential MBA students might need - housing, moving vans, rental cars, etc. Also, GMAT test prep tutoring, resume-writers, etc. And local chambers or business organizations might be a possible ad revenue stream - those that work to attract new business to their town - a town that has a major college probably also works to attract new students.

Hi Chris
Just to clarify - the number of Google search results isn't a good indication of potential traffic. It's a semi-OK way of guessing as to the market competition for a particular phrase.

You can gauge the amount of searches performed each month by using Google's external keyword suggestion tool.
There is of course lots of search volume for MBA phrases but it's going to be hard to rise to the top quickly with a new site. However, looks like you are creating some good quality original content and the inbound links will hopefully follow. Over time - with enough good quality content and inbound links - you could rank for really generic MBA phrases - but I wouldn't bank on it in the short-term.

I'd look for some niche MBA topics and write some good articles about those. Find some specific MBA topics and maybe even combine them with a specific location and write an article about that. $small_town specific type MBA program type articles. Another option would be to write a really valuable must have MBA pricing guide or comparison guide. Something that saves people lots of time and is worth registering for. Put a good portion of it out where people can read it and find enough value in it to link to it. Then require registration for the full download. There should be lots of MBA programs willing to pay per lead if people check that they want info on a MBA program.

Good luck!

Hello,

Your website is ok, but maybe I am missing something. From your post you mention listing universities/colleges that offer an MBA in one year. What I am seeing is the top 20 (and I might add most difficult to get into and most expensive) universities. I was immediately put off because that was not what I was looking for or what you said would be available. I think the key to a popular website is accurately fulfilling your goals in creating it in the first place. You have all of this great information, but have neglected to actually provide a comprehensive list of of MBA programs to be completed in 365 days.

I think if you can accomplish what you set out to do - traffic will follow. One of the best ways to generate traffic is word of mouth...if people aren't seeing what they want they won't pass it on to everyone else.

Take care and good luck
