Joseph,
SEO is important...obviously, but quality content is more important. I think that often website graders look at business sites in this manner, but honestly, how much credibility would you give a funding web site that were "dumbed down?"

I say this is one of those situations where content is king and SEO is a prince.

That's my $.02

Joseph,
Use the "Gunning Fog Index" to measure readability. Robert Gunning developed this technique yars ago and all of the major pubs use some form of it today. I even think Microsoft uses it in some fashion in Word. Anyway, it was designed to do exactly what you are trying to do and is very helpful for word targeting.

Good luck.

My business is helping other online businesses increase their traffic using legitimate SEO and search engine marketing techniques. There are many great businesses on the web that are failing because they just don't understand how to drive traffic to their site. Might be able to help you out some - http://www.onblur.net/
