Bandwidth is one of the most key important features through out this process. If u have a designated storage amount (fixed) and you go over that amount then u pay alot of fees to the hosting company. Make sure u get the right amount of bandwidth when developing a site. Bandwidth is like traffic the cars represent the traffic and the Bandwidth are the lanes. Thanks so so the math,

What are some of the differentiators between the big providers out there? It appears to be a pretty commoditized business so I want to ensure I am not missing something.

Very Good Question bizdevguy,

In some aspects it could be more cost effective. Some of the bigger providers can offer better service with lower prices. Some of the bigger providers whom have been in the idustry for a while can provide you the business owner with better hosting packages, with better services. Mom and pop operations are good, but face alot of stiff competition from bigger providers. This is common in alot of industries today. Bigger providers have alot of marketing dollars to get the word out about their products and services. Thanks.

reliability and then bandwidth and storage. so many of these cheap web hosts have crappy uptime.

bad uptime = lost revenue for you.

Its all about the uptime and the ability to react quickly when the site goes down. Hosting is one business where good Customer Service is a must!

When I build a site, the most critical issue I always address is page load speed. Much of this is the combination of the application and kind of hosting. Those being

Shared Hosting
Dedicated Hosting
Cloud services

And those broken down to

Linux, PHP, MySQL

Windows, PHP/ASP.Net,SQL(or SQLExpress)

A dedicated server or cloud service will provide the best performance, however if have a very light site or a good optimized application, shared hosting will do the job.

I'm a fan of Blue Deer Forest (www.bluedeerforest.com) - they have wind-powered hosting and you can call and talk to them on the phone about your service.

It really depends on your business and what your website(s) will be featuring. If you are a one man shop then a shared hosting environment should be fine. If you need more control of applications then a virtual private server or dedicated server are in order. The key things to look for include total bandwidth, total disk space, clean dedicated IPs, multiple DNS, database software, admin or root access. We use http://www.estontech.com for some of our web properties. Good Luck!
