Mary, the answer provided by Chris is too brief and is not technically accurate.

Let me answer the D&B question first, since I was with them for ten years. The D&B Number, called a DUNS number, is not an actual "requirement" for going into business. However, it is a requirement for doing business with the government. This also means that depending upon the type of transportation you are providing, you actually might need the DUNS number. Don’t worry, it doesn’t cost you anything. Think of it like a social security number for a business.

The "business insurance" is a much harder question to answer since again, it depends upon the type of transportation you are providing. For example, your personal insurance policy may not provide coverage relating to claims resulting from the use of the assets for business purposes. You should look into this much deeper to protect yourself and your customers.

Good luck with the business.

Mary,

Let me add on the insurance question -
1. If you are offering a state or local licensed transportation service, it may be a requirement of the license to have a certain amount/type of insurance. Check with the regulatory agency offering the license.

2. AND let me emphasis what Michael said, your personal insurance most likely will NOT cover any business related loss. Check with the agent or agency. At least contact a commercial insurance agent and discuss the matter and have them assess the risk on the type of business you plan to open. They are the professionals and that is their job - they know the statistics and the costs -- plus their estimate and advise if free.

Business Insurance may not be required by law. However, if you will be transporting people for a fee you need to have commercial vehicle insurance. Try Calco Commercial Insurance (877) 225-2699.
