Alvin Addison posted a new question on 10/14/2009

I am in the early stages of researching the possibility of starting up a staffing agency and am looking for any and all advice.

Iam thinking of starting a staffing agency for aviation maintenance and repair workers and although i have over 20 years experience in this feild i have no experince in staffaing or recruiting. is there nanyone out there who has started a company of this type that can tell me what it takes to properly get it of the ground and what they would do differently looking back? I am also looking for advice on writing a business and marketing plan. IS it better to do it yourself or hire an outside firm? Also has anyone delt in invoice forecasting and what are your thoughts on this concept.

The most important aspect to remember is to have a strong, defined business plan. It doesn't matter what your product/service is, if your plan is not one that grabs hold and impresses potential microlender, you will not move forward as you would like. Email me a rough draft of your current plan,or I will email you what I have found, through places like SCORE, and the SBA. Believe it or not, they have pointed me in the right direction, and after only 8mos. of following their guidelines, I am now in the Market stage of my new business launch. I would be happy to share any knowledge that may help you in your business. Siwelimagedesings@yahoo.com

There are business plan templates that Ive used in the past called goodtogobuisnessplans.com. I would set up quick books software to include intuit payroll services. You will need good GL and workers comp insurance. Office space I would recomend is 1,500 SF with 2 private offices, reception area and an open area for training and application set up. Your sales and marketing should definatly target your clientel, this should be detailed in your business plan. You need to have an account with Dunns and Bradstreet, run a credit check on all your customers, make sure you invoice them net 7 days. If you place an employee on their site on a Monday or for the week, you should invoice by that Friday and make sure they have a net 3 or 7 days to pay. This will help you for your first 2 or 3 years. Once you ve got a little revenue comming in , then you can look at net 30 with your customers. Also I wouldnt recomend signing multi year office lease's, start off at a month to month or no more than 6 to 12 months.
