If name is changed, is it necessary to gain approval of individual to write about him or her in a non-fiction book? If name not changed?

I'd like to write a non-fiction book (and accompanying screenplay with friend) about relationships i encountered in networking on the Internet. One of these relationships was profound and altered my career direction.
