There are 3 levels of registrations you need to be concerned about: Federal, State and local. Insurance is a whole other area - a good insurance broker (get quotes from several) can help you. Your personal home/car insurance most likely will NOT cover business loss - even in a home office. Back to registrations:
1. Federal you need an Employers ID # or EIN even if you are a biz of one. It is free and easy to get at:
http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/article/0,,id=98350,00.html
2. MA has a website to help you register your biz, check if you need a special certification and to obtain a Tax ID. See:
https://wfb.dor.state.ma.us/webfile/Business/Public/WebForms/Registration/TA1/WhoRegister.aspx
3. Locally you may need to obtain a business license and pay business privilege tax. It differs from city and town so call your local city tax department.
Hope that gets you going.
