Linda Jones posted a new question on 1/30/2010

I am transitioning into a new career - mental health counseling. What should I do prior to starting a private practice once I am licensed?

I was downsized from a corporation and decided to utilize my degrees in psychology and mental health counseling for a 2nd career. In the mean time, I am seeking a counseling position so that I can meet the required clinical hours to become fully licensed. In 3 years I would like to open a limited private practice. Any professional advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

You have three years to network -- that's a good thing! Take the time to meet as many people in the area in fields that interest you as possible.

Also, you need to specialize. What topics interest you? What topics are hot? Get all of the experience and learning in those that you can. That way, when you're out on your own, you'll have a skillset that can help you stand out. You can also meet professionals from other disciplines who can provide referrals. For instance, if you specialize in helping individuals who suffer from certain diseases, then you might want to meet physicians; if you specialize in trauma, then you might want to network with lawyers.
