Mary Kost posted a new question on 1/22/2010

I want to sell crafts online, what steps should I take to make it a legitimate home based business?

Do I need a business account or merchants account, tax id, a license, special permissions for pattern use?

Wow, Mary, you are asking a lot of questions in one. It really depends on how you want to sell your product. You can sell through another web site or set up your own web site. The first thing you want to do is write a business plan. Look on my site http://online-business-guide for information on writing a business plan. Then, let me know how I can help you next. Sharon

In addition to Sharon's good advice -
There are 3 levels of registrations you need to be concerned about: Federal, State and local. Insurance is a whole other area - a good insurance broker (get quotes from several) can help you. Your personal home/car insurance most likely will NOT cover business loss - even in a home office. Back to registrations:
1. Federal you need an Employers ID # or EIN even if you are a biz of one. It is free and easy to get at:
http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/article/0,,id=98350,00.html
2. OH has a good website to help you register your biz, check if you need a special certification and to obtain a Tax ID. See:
http://www.odod.state.oh.us/onestop/index.cfm
3. Locally you may need to obtain a business license and pay business privilege tax. It differs from city and town so call your local city tax department.

Hope that gets you going.
