David Young posted a new question on 8/27/2009

I am currently unemployed with very little savings left to live on, but I have a great idea for a new business. Where do I start.

My business idea is to repair or remodel homes in my city for low income or disabled individuals. I have a licensed contractor ready to go to work and we will employ disadvantaged youth that will learn a trade and become productive citizens. My plan will also relieve the city of rundown and vacant houses, there by elimanating the city of eyesores and vacant properties that breed criminal activities.

Hi David, What you are proposing sounds like it might lend itself to forming a non-profit organization. I would start by doing some research and networking with the local municipal and county agencies that might have an interest in your proposed activity. Pass your idea by them and ask if the municipality or county would consider funding when you get your organization together.

This is just very preliminary research. As Dave noted, to go further than that, you will need to develop a formal business plan in order to pursue grant money to fund your activities.

Good Luck, Ron
