How do I monitor quality from a home-based employee?

I'm hiring a person to do sewing piecework from home. They will make small items that I sell via my website and ship internationally to retail customers. It makes sense for that person to mail the items directly from his/her house, so that I am not running to their house every day to pick up and mail. How do I make sure the quality standards are met when I'm not seeing every item that goes out?

That's a problem. As long as your person sends work directly from her/his house, there is no chance for inspection.

I suggest you create a written, detailed "quality checklist" so that your seamstress/seamster knows what YOU consider quality work, and then go over a few samples with that list while he or she watches. Then periodically conduct "spot inspections" of random output at his or her home and hope that the few pieces you look at are representative of the individual's entire output.

You'll know soon enough, though...by the number of returns!

Could you have them take multiple pictures (or a video, turning it 360 degrees) so you could view it? Or perhaps lay it on a flatbed scanner?

from time to time have you or your family buy the product and see how they are doing. call your customers to see what their experience was and if they have any concerns or praise. go to the source which are your customers.
