Creating a non-profit entity is a multi step process. First, you will need to create a corporation in Wisconsin (usually a non-stock corporation). Check with the Wisconsin Secretary of State to learn more about how to do this. Once a corporate entity is formed, you will then need to apply to the IRS for tax exempt status. Before you do, obtain an Employers ID (EIN) from the IRS on line at www.irs.gov. Then review IRS Pub 557 and complete IRS Form 1023 which is extensive. You can view both Pub 557 and Form 1023 on line at the IRS Web site.
