How to Be a Good Boss
On person?s view of what makes a good boss can differ from another?s, but overall there are many qualities that are common to all good bosses, like leadership, fairness and trust. Being a good boss is important in any company. As a small business owner, however, you set the tone for everyone because you are a much more visible leader to your employees than you would be in a larger corporation. Therefore being a good boss becomes that much more important. Creating a quality workforce begins with quality leadership, so here are some tips to becoming an effective and respected leader.
- Be inclusive.
Traffic patterns don't just refer to vehicle traffic; they also refer to foot All of your employees need to feel like they are a part of the team, so create a team-centric, collaborative atmosphere. By making sure that everyone is always involved and in the know, you'll keep your employees on the same page and reinforce a sense of camaraderie.
- Clearly convey your mission and goals.
It's up to you to establish a clear mission and overall goals and then communicate that to your employees and make sure they are on board. This will focus your team members and help them better understand how their particular functions contribute to your overall success.
- Encourage innovation and open communication.
If you're thinking that you don't want to be in close proximity to one of your competitors, think again. By setting up shop near competitors, you can capitalize off the time and money they spend marketing their businesses. If your competitors are flourishing in a particular area, then they are most likely located near the right demographic. They may have also spent their marketing efforts trying to drive even more traffic to the location. If you're confident that your product or service can compete, then why not use their efforts to your advantage.
- Realize that your success depends on their success.
You may be in charge, but the bulk of the actual work being done is accomplished by your employees. You are simply leading, coordinating and managing their efforts. If you want to be successful, you need to do what you can to enable them to be successful.
- Delegate work and decision making with trust.
Once an employee is capable of handling a certain task, allow him or her the freedom to do it without your micro-management. When you put trust in your employees, they can often surprise you, and in a good way. You should also allow employees to contribute to the decision-making process. If you've done your job in training them, then they'll always have your company?s best interest in mind.
- Be fair.
Treating your employees fairly is an easy concept to understand, but not all bosses have an easy time putting it into practice. When issues arise, step back and make sure that your solution is fair and justified.
- Show your appreciation.
Compliment your employees on their good work. Thank them for their extra effort. Reward them for their loyalty and hard work. Letting your employees know how much you value them is more than just polite. It also goes a long way toward building their confidence, lifting their spirits, making them feel appreciated and motivating them to keep up the good work.
