How to Balance Business Travel with Your Life

If you frequently have to travel for business, then you're likely to eventually feel overwhelmed by it. Business travel takes a major toll on a person?s body and mind. Frequent business travel, however, also takes a toll on a person?s relationships with family and friends. The time that you spend at home is severely depleted when you're a frequent traveler. On top of that, the time that you spend at home also suffers in quality because you're tired and stressed from the demands of traveling. If you feel like you're constantly out of town on business and can start to feel the wear and tear it's causing in your life, here are three considerations that might help you reduce business travel and achieve a better balance

  1. Must you actually be there?
With all the advances in technology, like Web meetings, video conferencing and conference calls, you can accomplish most types of collaboration without ever having to leave your office. Investing in this kind of technology will save you the time, money and effort that come with business travel.

  2. Make the most of each trip.
Finding ways to meet with multiple clients or accomplish multiple goals rather than taking several business trips will save you a lot of time. This isn't always possible, but if you can, try to find a way to roll multiple trips into one.

  3. Know when to quit.
Heavy travel for months or even years on end can be severely detrimental to a person?s health and happiness. It's OK to take long breaks from the traveling lifestyle every now and then. It's also OK to say enough is enough when you feel like it?s become too much. Remember that business travel is not worth giving your whole life to.

If business travel is inevitable, which does happen from time to time, then the key to achieving balance is to reduce the toll it takes on you. Here are some helpful tips.

  1. Carry-on
Carry-on luggage is the most efficient way to go. When you carry-on, you?ll get out of the airport and on your way much quicker. In addition, you won't have the added stress of the airline possibly losing your luggage during transit.

  2. Stay in the right place
It pays to spend the extra money to stay somewhere you know you'll be comfortable. Having a quiet, spacious room with a comfortable bed can make a big difference. It's also nice to have a good continental breakfast to get you off to a good start in the morning.

  3. Stay healthy
You have to take care of yourself in order to be able to take care of business. Unfortunately, being on the road is not usually conducive to healthy living. Do what you can to make good food choices and incorporate any kind of exercise possible.

  4. Stay in touch
Use your evenings away to keep in contact with those close to you. It may not be ideal, but catching up over the phone or Internet is better than not catching up at all.
