Business is certainly a priority, but if you have a spouse and children, then they need to be your number one priority. Though the time and effort that small business owners are able to contribute to their families will vary, it?s a pretty safe bet that most wish they had more time each day to dedicate solely to their families. Unfortunately, many of them let work dictate what they put in to their familial relationships. What you have to remember is that no matter how much work you have to do or how stressed out you are, keeping family your number one priority is never a mistake.
Work is important. You need to be able to provide for your family and achieve your own personal goals at the same time. While you're working, that needs to be your focus. Keep in mind, however, that the time you gained working nights, weekends and holidays is never worth the nights, weekends and holidays you lost with your family.
This could be family dinners or game nights, reading together before bed, or going on family outings every Sunday. Make sure that whatever you decide to do, you have a routine of regularly scheduled family times. By establishing a routine, it will be easier to stick to it and not let other distractions creep in to your schedule.
When you are working, your attention needs to be focused on the business at hand. As soon as it?s time to quit, however, you need to leave your work at the door. When you get home you need to show your family that you care by being attentive and focused on them. If you start talking about work, reacting to work or actually doing work, your family will begin to feel neglected.
By spending a significant amount of time at home, your children will be more frequently surrounded by the positive influence that a parent can provide. By participating in fun and engaging activities with your family, you'll stay connected and grow more meaningful relationships. Remember that quantity and quality are not substitutes for each other. They need to be balanced out and given equal attention.
Your kids of course are a huge part of your family, but so is your spouse. Your husband or wife deserves just as much of your time and attention as your children, so don't neglect to spend quality one-on-one time with him or her as well.
