How to Stay Focused at Work

Focus is not usually an easy thing for many people to maintain, but with newer technologies like cell phones, email, texting and instant messaging, it gets even more difficult. Distraction is an even bigger issue for people who work on the Internet on a regular basis. Unfortunately focus isn't something that just happens whenever we need it. Instead you have to work for it.

Here are some tips to staying focused while you're on the job.

  1. Carefully plan your day.
Write out a checklist of the tasks that need to be accomplished. Then make a rough timeline of when you'll accomplish them.

  2. Create a workable environment.
Your surroundings must be conducive to focus and attention. If you work in a noisy office, wear headphones. If that doesn't work, move to a quieter room or area of the office.

  3. Change your IM status when necessary.
If you don't want to be disturbed for a period of time, let your colleagues know that you are busy or away.

  4. Fight the urge to constantly check email.
Instead of immediately checking every time you get a new message, set up regular times when you check the emails that have come through thus far.

  5. Keep your desk organized.
A desk in disarray will make it much more difficult to stay on task and not get distracted by the mess of things in front of you. Be diligent about keeping it fairly tidy.

  6. Avoid those people that distract you.
Try to avoid the people that frequently engage you in mindless chit chat. If you can't, politely explain that you can't be distracted at the moment, and let him or her know when might be a better time.

  7. Schedule breaks.
By scheduling breaks into your day, you'll actually end up being more productive. How? You'll be able to refresh, regroup and return to work with a more focused attention.

  8. Get plenty of sleep.
Sleep deprivation can have serious effects on your ability to concentrate. If it builds up, it can also cause stress. Try to get the recommended 7-8 hours per night.

  9. Eat healthy and regularly.
Eating the right foods and maintaining a healthy lifestyle go a long way in helping your concentration. Also make sure you're eating throughout the day. Depriving yourself will have a negative effect on your focus and productivity.

  10. Go to work with the right mindset.
Much of focus and concentration is psychological. Be mindful of the fact that your perception of the tasks that you have to accomplish is the cornerstone of keeping a sharp focus.
