Sean

No so much as book but a few resources you may find helpful as you consider ideas and then develop your business plan.

Both Entrepreneur Magazine & INC Magazine have great websites packed with resources including ideas, business plans, marketing, how to finance, etc.

plans.com has a ton of sample business plans and while none will be just what you want to do, glancing through them now will help you see the breadth and depth of information/knowledge you really need to know before you spend dime one.

Depending on they type of business, you may find the Guerrilla Marketing line of books helpful. Most libraries carry them or you can learn more at gmarketing.com.

And SCORE can help as well. Counselors offer free business counseling to help you get off on the right foot and more chapters have a great one day seminar on how to start a business. See www.score.org and use the Find SCORE option to locate your closest Chapter.

Good luck and please let me know if there is more I can answer.

The link below takes you to a good read at amazon website. The book is written by Entrepreneur Press. It is the number one best seller on amazon. You can read the reviews on the book as well as some few pages in the book online to see if you like it. Another option is to see if your local library has a copy of the book so that you can borrow it.

This is biased towards software companies and is not so much a "how-to" as a "this is what we did". Still I think it's super interesting for anyone starting a business. http://www.amazon.com/Founders-Work-Stories-Startups-Problem-Solution/dp/1430210788

I'm enjoying "Enchantment: The Art of changing Hearts, Minds and Actions" by Guy Kawasaki. Enchantment is basically the art of persuasion by building trust, paying it forward and making the world a better place. Sound simplistic? Maybe, but it's a great reminder of how simple it is to build your following by being kind, transparent and useful to others. Here's the website. http://www.guykawasaki.com/enchantment/

The above books are wonderful books for business people to read and use as a guide through the maze of uncertainty in running a company....they will help...but to read, understand and put into practice the knowledge those books hold.. "You" will need enough "experiential input" to allow you to understand what the books are telling you...that will come with time.

I am "entrepreneur" for almost 30 years...building companies for myself and other business people. I now coach some of the top CEO's in and out of the country.

In this time I have come to learn that if you don't believe in yourself and have an understanding of "who you are" then all the books in the world on business will not improve your success rate...not until "you" fully believe in your abilities as the person you are...then...and only then will you truly become successful in life and in business....

If i were you starting out I would start with books such as:
"As a Man Thinketh" By James Allen,
"The Journey Home" By Lee Carrol,
"The Answer" By John Assaraf & Murry Smith,
"When Things Fall Apart" By Pema Chodron..etc.

Work on "finding you" and the music "You" hear and play.....listen for the truth in the moment you find yourself in...Remember...you will always find the answers that are needed when you start your search from within yourself... "FIRST"

GOOD FUTUNE IN ALL THAT YOU CHOOSE...

Peace be with you always
Dr. Bob

I love your recommendations but I think Assaraf is that guy who had a sweat lodge and some of his students died... isn't that right? - Tamara Field 1 on 6/16/2011

These are all great books for starting businesses. But, I would recommend "The E-myth Revisited" by Michael Gerber...
This will teach you some critical steps to creating essential processes to help your business exceed! ~ Mr. Clean
