If you still doing 100% traditional marketing you are missing an opportunity. People are looking for products and services online these days and you need to show up where they are looking. That means at a minimum having a polished and professional looking website that can be seen and indexed by the search engines. After that you can explore paid search engine advertising and e-mail marketing (which many small business owners say has the best return on investment of any marketing spend). Don't forget facebook and twitter too. You can create a presence for your business online with these free tools as well.

Every year one of my business networking group hosts a panel discussion titled "Your Marketing Mix". The list of marketing strategies, tools and techniques seems to grow exponentially every year!

For almost all businesses, a successful marketing plan balances digital and traditional marketing strategies. For example, a nationwide retail product will have brochures and trade show setups, pointing to a great 'anchor' company website for post show visits, and email and/or Facebook and/or Twitter for ongoing communications with potential clients and customers.

Most websites will rely on great SEO to attract prospects from the major search engines, but not all. Established "experts" with a focused niche and great referrals might only need SEO for their name and company name. Speakers need great handouts and leave-behinds to encourage people to visit their website, join their email list, become a facebook fan, etc.

The guerilla marketing tenet - takes 8-21 exposures to a business brand for a person to take action - is still true. The techniques are now a mix of digital and traditional!
