I have started my own business "Sweet Stix" www.cakepops.org . I have registered the name but, need help with how to move on.

I am in the process of certifying my kitchen.I have a food handlers card. I'm working on my business plan. What other licenses do I need? Is there an actual business license I have to have? I paid $100 to the state of Oregon for the name . Is that considered a small business license?

There are typically 3 levels of registration required to open a business: Federal, State & local. Have you obtained a Federal EIN number? and contacted your local city/town/county on a local business license? Even area is different - in PA for example towns require a business license and payment of Business Privilege Tax and a community emergency mgt annal fee.

Since you have an Oregon State business name you may already have seen this State website but if not see: http://www.oregon.gov/DOR/BUS/starting.shtml

Plus search in that site for the tax rate for your items, any employee requirements, etc.

Your local SCORE office can also help you with these questions and more. Schedule a free business counseling session with them as well. See www.score.org to find your local office by using the Find Experts field.
