Looking for tips on hiring an experienced, qualified sales associate who can deliver results

We are looking to hire an experienced sales associate, but we have not previously searched outside our immediate network of friends/family, so I have some questions:

1) What questions do you ask during interviews to get at a candidate's sales ability?
2) What are the red flags to be aware of in resumes or in their answers (specifically around their sales ability)
3) What systems or methods do you use for establishing and tracking sales deliverables?
4) What is one thing we absolutely need to know about hiring and/or managing a sales associate?

Since you are hiring an experienced sales associate, it is best to ask him questions regarding his past work experiences. Questions like "Tell me about your greatest achievements from your prior job", and "What sales strategies from your former experiences can you employ to help increase our sales?" are good interview questions.

Also, in order to further evaluate their sales ability, why not ask them to sell you a product. This way, you can assess the candidate's performance first hand.

Thank you Lee. Those are great questions to ask, and I like the idea of having a candidate try to sell a product to us.
