Look at the bottom of websites you love and see if the web developer's name is listed. Ask friends and professional acquaintances if they've used someone they like.

The best way to find a good web designer word of mouth. I find that through word of mouth you can find not only someone who is skilled but someone too who has the ability to get along with you as they did with the person who referred them to you. Some of my best clients have come as referrals from my other excellent referrals. I also agree with what Marina Martin said, but often times those designers can be expensive. Most people are surprised what it costs to get a good website.
