I just started a consulting / service business and completed service work for a client. Any reason to charge a sales tax?

Brain,

Check with your State Department of Revenue; get the details on all aspects of your business - you may find some aspects taxable and others not. For example I had a marketing consulting business that also offered limited design services. The consulting time was not taxable but the editing of photos for marketing materials AND the production of the items were.

Every State is different; there will a detailed list on their website or you can call them - though I recommend if you do that you record the time, date and name of the person (and their state ID number) you speak with for your files.

See here for your State:
https://etax.dor.ga.gov/salestax/salestax_genlinfo.aspx
look also at the Contractor section on this page to see if your apply:
https://etax.dor.ga.gov/salestax/st3forms/st3_indx.aspx

AND note the different ratss and increases pending for differenet communities.

Alastly watch for Use Tax; this is a tax you must pay on taxable items you purchase outside your State but use for your business. The most common is a computer you buy online and do not pay sales tax; if it is a taxable item in your State you must file/pay Use Tax .
